Karl Laumbach and David Kirkpatrick measure and sketch an agave roasting pit, Site LA 72860 on White Sands Missile Range, NM

HSR's excavations at Fresnal Shelter in the Sacramento Mountains provided the first and most comprehensive view of early agriculture in the Tularosa Basin during the Archaic period. Crews have excavated at the Oliver Lee House near Alamogordo, the McSween House in Lincoln, and Rayado Ranch at Philmont Scout Ranch near Cimarron. HSR also conducted the first and largest data recovery project undertaken on White Sands Missile Range at Rhodes Canyon in 1982 and 1983. Since that time, HSR has conducted a number of data-recovery projects for both private and federal clients in southern New Mexico, including White Sands Missile Range, the Army Corps of Engineers, Phelps Dodge Corporation, Dames and Moore for U.S. Sprint, Pathnet, the City of Alamogordo, Duke Engineering and Services, the New Mexico Department of Transportation, and Valley Telephone of Arizona (an ongoing project involving data recovery as well as archival and oral-history research for 28 sites).

One effort in 2003-2004 was an undertaking on White Sands Missile Range for the test excavation of an agave roasting pit in the San Andres Mountains. After the preparation of a research design and data-recovery plan that were approved by the State Historic Preservation Office and the Mescalero and Ysleta del Sur Tribal Historic Preservation Offices, the data-recovery plan was implemented. Eight square meters of the agave roasting pit was excavated; ceramic, lithic, macrobotanical, faunal, radiocarbon, and thermoluminescense analyses were coordinated; and, the. results were synthesized to provide a comprehensive report detailing the use history of the roasting feature. Additionally, a scholarly paper was prepared and presented at the 2004 annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology in Montreal.
